Dental Implants - the overview
by Harry Shiers
When there are a number of teeth that need to be replaced, implants may be the answer. With this type of treatment, dental implants are positioned in the jawbone and a single tooth or multiple teeth are attached to the implant or implants. Harry Shiers places implants routinely and because he is one of very few dentists with the advanced and specific training in Implant Dentistry (Master of Science) he also places implants for fellow dentists who refer their patients to the centre.
A dental implant is like a screw or cylinder, made from titanium, which is inserted into the jaw bone to replace a natural tooth root. The dental implant must heal and integrate within the bone for up to three months (treatment times vary for individual patients) before it can be restored with a crown, which is fitted by us over a couple of appointments. Sometimes the implant treatment can be completed in a weeks.
There are many benefits with having a dental implant placed instead of a dental bridge or denture. A dental implant supported tooth looks and feels like a natural tooth, it does not affect adjacent teeth, and is much easier to clean and maintain than bridgework. It is also strong and able to perform the same functions as a natural tooth.
