Alan Gelb is a senior fellow at the Center for Global Development. He was previously director of development policy at the World Bank and chief economist for the bank’s Africa region and staff director for the 1996 World Development Report “From Plan to Market.

Use of solar power and biometric ID to provide healthcare in rural Africa

A postnatal care program using biometric identification has been developed in Cross River State, Nigeria. Since power supply in that region is quite unreliable, the electronics to run it is powered by solar panels. This is a relevant example of how new technology can be transported and used in rural areas and in environments that we would normally consider difficult.
