A smear test is a very important part of women’s general health. It is an extremely effective way for preventing cervical cancer, which is a difficult disease in people’s development. However, in spite of it being such an important test in women’s health, a smear test does not have the ability to detect any disease other than cervical cancer.
Tests for cancer are almost never painful because we use anesthetics; local anesthetics, which freeze the skin and underlying tissue in order to access the biopsy painlessly.
For most biopsies there are no risks in having the procedures performed and there are no associations between biopsies and the spread of cancer. However, for some specific and rare cancers it is felt better not to do the biopsy at the time, but to wait and carry out a definitive surgery. Either way, a tissue diagnosis has to be made whether that is by biopsy or by surgery.

A biopsy is a procedure that involves removing a small sample of tissue from a living subject to check under a microscope in order to determine the presence or extent of a cancer. Cancer can only be firmly ruled in or out by taking a tissue sample. Therefore, it is important for a biopsy to be taken prior to a diagnosis of cancer.
There are three kinds of biopsies: (i) incisional biopsy or core biopsy is when a sample of tissue is removed; (ii) a needle biopsy or fine-needle aspiration is when a sample of tissue or fluid is removed with a needle and (iii) an excisional biopsy is when a whole tumor or lesion is removed.
Many people successfully recover from cancer. After the completion of the original treatment package most people do not require any additional treatment to recover. When you are recovering from cancer you are likely to have regular check ups and it might be recommended that you take drugs over a extended period of time.
Cancer need not be painful. We have successful ways to control cancer pain and also pain associated with cancer treatment. Thus, many people with cancer do not experience pain.
Cancer occurs when a single cell starts to divide repeatedly, producing abnormal copies of itself, rather than dividing ocassionally just to replace worn out cells. If the imune system does not destro these cells , they continue to to reproduce and invade surrounding tissue. Cancer cells can spread to other parts of the body through the blood and lymph systems. Cancer is not just one disease but many diseases. Most cancers are named for the organ or type of cell in which they start: for example, cancer that begins in the breast is called breast cancer. Although there are more than 100 different types of cancer, cancers can be broadly grouped into four types, depending on which tissues they come from:
- Carcinomas: arise from the cells that cover external and internal body surfaces. For example, lung, breast, and colon.
- Sarcomas: arise from cells found in the supporting tissues of the body such as bone, cartilage, fat, connective tissue and muscle.
- Lymphomas: arise in the lymph nodes and tissues of the body's immune system.
- Leukaemias: arise from immature blood cells that grow in the bone marrow and tend to accumulate in large numbers in the bloodstream.
