Physical inactivity causes more premature deaths than smoking.
There is overwhelming evidence that low physical activity is the major contributor to non-communicable diseases, and increasing evidence that sedentary behaviour is a separate but equally important risk factor that needs to be addressed.
This two day international conference took place on Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd June 2013 at the Royal Society of Medicine in London. Chaired by Dr Mike Loosemore, it brought together experts, leaders and innovators working in exercise medicine to discuss their latest research.

Mike Farrar is an independent management consultant and former Chief Executive of the NHS Confederation. He joined the organisation in May 2011.
Mike was chief executive of the North West England SHA from May 2006 to April 2011. He was previously chief executive of West Yorkshire and South Yorkshire Strategic Health Authorities, chief executive of Tees Valley Health Authority and head of primary care at the Department of Health.
Mike was also a board member of Sport England, and in August 2009 was appointed as National Tsar for Sport and Health. Mike was also awarded the CBE in 2005 for services to the NHS and is an honorary fellow of the University of Central Lancashire.

Since graduating in Medicine in 1985, Mike has become one of the leading and most influential sports medics in the UK. In addition to his work at 76 Harley Street, his current post includes Lead Sports Physician (South of England) for the English Institute of Sport based at University College London (UCL) where he treats elite athletes from a wide range of sports, and he is currently the team doctor to the British Boxing, Fencing, and Bobsleigh Team. He has travelled extensively with national squads, accompanying teams to Olympic and Commonwealth Games, World and European Championships.
He is the Chief Medical Officer for the Commonwealth Games. Mike is active in various fields of sport and exercise medicine research and has published work on various aspects of SEM. He is interested in the education of future SEM doctors and helps run the training programme for new consultants in London.
